Rời nhà khi 5h sáng, bà Lê Thị Thẩm (53 tuổi, Long An) cộng cháu mình cầm theo túi cơm trưa. Họ tới vườn mai vàng ở phố Bình Lợi (huyện Bình Chánh). Đây là những người làm nghề hái lá trên cây mai. Công việc nghe tưởng thuần tuý nhưng cần những kỹ năng khăng khăng. Bứt lá nhanh tay, không được làm gãy nụ mai. Bởi nụ hỏng thì cây sẽ không thể ra bông. Việc hái lá giúp cây mai cho bông nở nhất tề, trổ rộ đều. Trong khoảng thời điểm hái lá đến lúc cây trổ bông đẹp khoảng 10-15 ngày. Lá cây sau lúc hái để lại ủ gốc nhằm bổ sung hữu cơ cho cây. tới 10h sáng, bà Thẩm và cháu đã nhặt trụi lá hơn 10 cây mai. “Tôi đi làm trong khoảng 5h sáng đến 3h chiều thì nghỉ. Làm khoảng 10 tiếng. Một ngày được trả 300.000 đồng. Mọi người làm đều mang theo đồ ăn trưa. Sắm gốc mai vàng ngồi giảm thiểu nắng, ăn tại chỗ rồi tranh thủ làm”, bà đề cập.Bà Lê Thị Tuyến, 57 tuổi (Bình Chánh) bình thường làm cỏ, trồng mai tại vườn. Tới vụ Tết thì chuyển sang hái lá mai. Thu nhập một tuần hái lá hơn hai triệu đồng. Thời kì đầu, bà Tuyến đứng nắng mệt nhưng làm nhiều thành quen. Với cái nắng vỡ đầu, người hái lá người nào cũng thiết bị mũ, áo kít mít, mặc 2-3 lớp áo chống nắng. Ông Lê Thành Được (54 tuổi, Bình Chánh) san sẻ, các nhân công nam bình thường cuốc đất cho vườn, bứng chuyển gốc mai. Sau đấy chuyển sang làm cỏ, dọn gốc. Tới thời điểm cần hái lá thì chủ vườn Mọi chi tiết xin liên hệ. Ngày công nhặt lá là 300.000 đồng/ngày, cuốc đất 375.000 đồng/ngày. Theo chủ vườn mai Phương Bình (TP. Thủ Đức) - anh Nguyễn Ngọc Phương, những năm trước dịch, mỗi vụ Tết có đến cả trăm người đến hái lá kín vườn. Riêng giá cả thuê nhân công đã từ 300-350 triệu đồng. tuy thế, do lượng bán ra năm nay thấp và vườn xịt thuốc rụng lá nên giảm nhân công. Vườn chỉ thuê hơn 10 người hái lá, giá cả năm nay còn 30-40 triệu đồng. Anh Bùi Ngọc Đức, chủ vườn mai vàng Hữu Đức (huyện Bình Chánh), cũng san sẻ, thời tiết năm nay ổn cho sự lớn mạnh và sinh trưởng của cây mai. Nắng phổ quát nên thời khắc hái lá trễ hơn mọi năm. Do vắng khách, vườn chỉ thuê từ 10-20 người đến làm, giảm 50% so với các năm. tuy thế, do tác động của dịch bệnh Covid-19 nên Tết 2022 nông dân không bán được hàng, ko xuống lá đại trà như các năm trước dịch. Các nhà vườn chỉ chọn những cây nào có lái buôn hoặc khách đã đặt hàng, cây dáng đẹp để xuống lá. Nông dân tuyển lựa cây chứ ko xuống lá cả cánh đồng vì tốn nhân lực, tốn giá cả.
